Tesla Nears Halt of Cybertruck Production

Tesla Nears Halt of Cybertruck Production
Due to lower-than-expected sales, US car manufacturer Tesla is planning to stop production of its electric pickup truck, the Cybertruck. By mid-2027, the vehicle’s production line will be moved from its Texas factory in the United States. Instead, the company aims to increase production of its self-driving taxi, the Cybercab.

According to a Reuters report, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced this plan in a post on social media platform X last Friday. He stated that Cybertruck production would be reduced, and the factory’s capacity would be utilized for Cybercab manufacturing. However, there has been no definitive announcement yet on whether Cybertruck production will be transferred to another factory or entirely discontinued.

The following day, Saturday, Musk further stated that an additional shift would be introduced in production to fulfill pending Cybertruck orders. He claimed that current orders must be completed before the production line is moved to increase Cybercab production in June-July 2027.

Tesla first unveiled the design of the Cybertruck in 2019. The vehicle garnered significant attention from the outset due to its unique angular shape and stainless steel exterior. Deliveries to customers began in late 2023. At that time, Elon Musk had set an ambitious target of selling 250,000 Cybertrucks annually.

However, in reality, the company is far behind that target. According to data from automotive market analysis firm Kelley Blue Book, only 20,237 Cybertrucks were sold in the US in 2025, whereas sales in 2024 were 38,965 units. This indicates a nearly 48% decrease in the vehicle’s sales within a year.

Along with declining market demand, questions have also been raised regarding the Cybertruck’s quality and safety. According to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the vehicle has faced multiple recalls since its market launch. Some vehicles required repairs due to various defects, while a few issues were resolved through software updates.

The commercial prospects for the Cybertruck in the European market are also not very promising. Its sharp, stainless steel exterior is not compatible with Europe’s conventional regulations concerning pedestrian safety, creating a major obstacle to its approval there.

On the other hand, the Cybercab is increasingly becoming a crucial part of Tesla’s future business plans. This fully autonomous vehicle lacks conventional steering wheels, accelerators, and brake pedals. It is designed with the aim of transporting passengers without a driver.

Since last September, limited-scale passenger transport has begun in Austin, USA, using Cybercabs for a fee. However, regulatory agencies are still reviewing the vehicle’s safety systems and approval for commercial use.

According to analysts, the plan to move the Cybertruck production line signals a significant shift in Tesla’s business strategy. Alongside conventional electric vehicle production, the company is now increasing its investment and focus on artificial intelligence, robotics, and driverless transportation technology.

However, Cybercab production and commercial operations are still in their initial stages. Consequently, doubts remain about how quickly this new technology vehicle can replace the Cybertruck.
