PM Directs Expedition of Y-shaped Second Padma Bridge, Second Jamuna Bridge, and Padma Barrage Projects

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has instructed to expedite the plans for the construction of the Y-shaped Second Padma Bridge, the Second Jamuna Bridge, and the Padma Barrage. He gave these directives on Tuesday (November 3) during a meeting with officials from relevant ministries and divisions at the Secretariat.

During the meeting, it was informed that feasibility studies are currently underway for the construction of the Second Padma Bridge and the Second Jamuna Bridge. These studies are expected to conclude by September of next year. Upon receiving the study reports, the final locations, designs, and estimated costs of the two bridges will be determined.

The meeting also included detailed discussions on the construction of Y-shaped link roads to make the communication system of the Second Padma Bridge more accessible and efficient.

Furthermore, it is anticipated that the construction of the Second Jamuna Bridge will bring significant changes to the communication system in Rangpur and the entire northern region. This aspect also received special emphasis during the meeting.

Additionally, the construction of the Padma Barrage for the country’s water management and protection was discussed. Specifically, the potential benefits reviewed included mitigating water scarcity during the dry season, increasing agricultural production, maintaining the natural flow of the river, preserving environmental balance, and establishing new road communication over the barrage.

The meeting emphasized the importance of necessary financing, land acquisition, rehabilitation of affected individuals, and enhanced coordination among relevant ministries and agencies for the implementation of these three mega projects. The Prime Minister instructed officials concerned to take the necessary steps to rapidly advance the planning and implementation process of these projects.
